Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you and what is your background?
My name is Simone Tavino and I am a graduate of Salem State University with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and a minor in Music Technology. I was chapter president of my university's Audio Engineering Society and studied abroad at The University of Sydney where I studied audio engineering at the Sydney Conservatory of Music. My day job is as a systems administrator for a Telecomms company and my night job is being a Broadcast Engineer with the Boston Red Sox organization. I'm also a Marine Corps veteran, where I served 4 years as a Comms Marine in Iwakuni, Japan.
What is the purpose of this website?
I created this website as part of my college capstone project at Salem State. My goal was to display my web development skills (and prove that I didn't waste my G.I Bill) and combine it with my passion for visual and audio arts. The primary goal of SFX University is to provide royalty-free sound effects and music to anyone who wants to use it, such as students and content creators just starting out.
What makes this library different from others?
There are a other sound effects libraries out there, many of which i've used myself. However, many of them are locked behind a paywall, leaving hobbyists, students, and independent creatives priced out. Additionally, many libraries are being flooded with A.I content and shamelessly stolen material. This library was created to address these issue by allowing users to download sounds that I have created myself and use them free of charge.
Is there really no cost for using these sounds?
Nope! Every audio file that is featured on this site is free to use so long as you credit the website. If you do want to support me on my creative endevaors, please consider subscribing to my patreon.
I want to credit this website in a project. What should I put in the project description/end credits?
Copy and paste the below portion into your project description or end-credits.

Select sound effects provided Simone Tavino (sfxuniversity.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/.

How often are sound files updated?
There is no definitive timetable for new sound files, especially now that i'm a full time adult with a full time job, but there will be semi-regular updates.
What tools do you use to record your sounds?
I have my own home studio set-up, which allows me to record stuff from the comfort of my bedroom. The exact equipment I use can be found on my wordpress blog here. For my field recording set-up, check here. For software, I use Avid Pro Tools, Ableton Live and Audacity.
Final question: How do I download your sound files?
Simply go to "Downloads" and browse our library, select a sound, and click the download button to save it to your device!
